At least, for one song, it makes a point that not all men are dogs and will cheat at a moment’s notice. It also tries to dispel the notion that all men cheat no matter who they are. “What Kind of Man Would I Be” is a celebration of how true love will always win out over temptation. It’s a song that tells that age’s long story about the temptation to stray and cheat on one’s partner. Some have mistaken it as a story sung about one man’s infidelity when in fact it’s a song about staying true and loyal to that one special person in their life. This song, at first listen, sounds like a very depressing track. Their sound is not overdubbed, auto-tuned and they sing with an honest passion about subject matters without bragging about themselves. One of the secrets which makes Mint Condition always relevant in the music and R&B scene is the fact that these are musicians. Not many R&B groups from the 80’s and 90’s ever last beyond a few releases. It’s been a long and hard road for Mint Condition, but the fact that even now the band remains together, strong and still putting out albums. “What Kind of Man Would I Be” by the band Mint Condition remains one of those songs that people always say they love, but never knowing just who sang it. The homie JayeHunnie: Everything And Nothing All At Once. The next song for the current romance-themed “Song of the Day” column comes direct from 1996 and from one of the most underrated and under-appreciated R&B bands of the past 20 years.Recognize The Real: This nigga's mixtape game is THOROUGH.Poisonous Paragraphs: Dart Adams Explains It All.Nah Right: I Might Love The '90s, But I Keep Up On Today.HimAndHerInTheStuy: That's How They Livin'.F My Life: Proof That Your Day Ain't So Bad.Classic Mixtapes: Tapemasta For The Win.“Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” (1991) And with that, I damn near wanna apologize for sleepwalking on the Mint. Make no mistake, aggressive content is still aiight by me, but I’ve grown to re-appreciate some of the more melodic sides to this music shit too. Back then, the closest I would get to rockin’ with a live band was The Roots. My ears have mellowed out considerably when compared to, say, how they were in ’94. They still make music and perform today, although not as regularly as they did then.Īy, I can’t call it. Although they had some hits to their name (especially “Pretty Brown Eyes”), they were probably one of the most underrated R&B groups of the decade. So groups like MC and Tony! Toni! Tone! (to an extent) were really in their own world. Most band-based groups had faded out in the late-’80s, and the “ Neo-Soul” thing hadn’t jumped off yet. As I said in the D’Angelo entry, a lot of R&B was all about beats and slow jams. Mint Condition were one of the very few “band” groups that were getting airplay back then. Whether it was because their songs were too slow, or their style was too “mature”, or whatever the case- I definitely had the radar off when it came to them. Listening to them now, I don’t know how “U Send Me Swingin” didn’t become a favorite of mine. Even when I did get into R&B again, I still wasn’t into theirs, as I was into the sound that was more geared towards my age group. I guess that in hindsight, I can say that I wasn’t old enough for it back then. My brother was always playing their Definition of a Band album, and seeing as how my room was directly next to his, I couldn’t avoid hearing it.īut only in recent years have I really listened to their music. Somewhere around the later part of the decade, I grew to appreciate Mint’s music. That was only for a brief time around ’93-’94, but it was a gradual thing for me to fully get back into it. It also didn’t help that for a minute there, I was on my “fuck R&B” mode for a lil’ while, so I wasn’t checkin’ for much of anything that wasn’t on Rap City. I’d heard their songs and seen their videos here and there, but I wasn’t really up on them. As much music as I listened to during the ’90s, there are a few artists and albums that I admit I slept on and took a long while to get around to. ![]()
